Flook- Flatfish (1999)

The first studio album from this dazzling young Anglo/Irish four-piece, two years on from their live debut CD, is also their first recording since Mike McGoldrick, one of the band's original flute and whistle players, was replaced by bodhran sensation John Joe Kelly.
McGoldrick's departure was widley seen as a blow; if so, Flook have triumphed over adversity. Sarah Allen and Brian Finnegan continue to conjure a breathtaking array of wind blown timbres and textures, each playing several variations on the band's signature instrument. Kelly and guitarist Ed Boyd make a dream team rhythm section, their precision honed yet gossamer-fine interplay meshing mesmerically with the melodies, Boyd occasionally picking out the tune, with Finnegan and Allen hit a sparky percussive groove.
No guest players, no electronic embellishments, just a craking set of tunes, from tender waltzes to fiery Balkan dances, and a cornucopia of sublime musicianship.”

Sharon Shannon & Galvin, McGoldrick, Murray- Tunes (2005)

“Tunes” is an album from Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin, fiddler and leader of seminal trad band, De Dannan, Mike McGoldrick, flautist and member of Capercaillie and Flook and who fronts his own band Fused, and one-man rhythm section guitarist, Jim Murray. The material on this new album is exactly as the title suggests – a collection of tunes ranging from traditional Irish to traditional Asturian tunes with some newly composed Scottish tunes and newly composed tunes by each of this talented quartet thrown in for good measure. “Tunes” was recorded during December 04 and January 05 in Galway and not only reflects the individual style and virtuosity of each of the musicians, but also introduces us to the powerhouse of energy and creativity generated by them collectively....

Tonolec Folk- Los Pasos Labrados (2010)

Deiseal- The Long Long Note (1993)

Irish Traditional music came under the spotlight in the seventies, thanks to the ground breaking work of such bands as Sweeney’s MenPlanxty and The Bothy Band. These groups exposed a whole crop of younger musicians to the creative possibilities in a mountain of music as old as the hills.
Here on this recording Cormac Breatnach, Niall Ó Callanáin and Paul O’Driscoll, three of that younger crop, display their creative musicality. Both founding members of the highly innovative, but short lived, Meristem, Cormac and Niall have been playing together since their school days.
In this trio format, which is the ideal compromise between solo and group playing, they perform a mixture of traditional and original music in a style that reflects not just their traditional roots and modern influences but their own musical souls as well.
I love and enjoy their music, I hope you, the listener, will too.

Le mystère des voix bulgares-Vol 1 (1975)

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares Female Vocal Choir used to be known all over the world as The Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir is an ensemble of rare artistic gift and enormous popular appeal.
The choir truly represents one of the most amazing success stories in music. Created in the early fifties the choir’s first mission was to record authentic and arranged music for multi-voice choral folk songs to be recorded and broadcast first on the radio and later on TV.

Marcel Cellier, Swiss music producer, discovers the beauty of Bulgarian folk songs, folk singers, their unique voices and choral skills and in 1975 releases his first album – Volume I which he called “Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares”(The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices). The album soon became a best seller. In 1987 was made Volume II which earned in 1990 to Marcel Cellier and this choir which is the main performer on the album, the American “Grammy Award”. It was at that time that the choir was called “Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares”.

The year 1988 was the beginning of the choir’s triumphant touring the world – five times in the USA and Canada, three times in Latin America, annual tours in most European countries, concerts in India, Hong Kong, etc. The CD named “Rituals” released by Nonesuch in 1994 was nominated for Grammy again in class “Folklore”. Warner Brothers also released Cellier’s volumes I, II, III(1990) with sales of more than a quarter of a million albums in USA and over a million internationally.

The singers transform sounds into strange vocal colours as if something other than human voice, perhaps some foreign instrument is playing. The singers “jubilate, shout, ornament, form fast and perfect glissandos, let one crazy rhythm follow another and make their voices built the most darling cords” and “suddenly a listener believes he has heard an archaic world of sounds from times long ago”, another sees “the marriage of the avant-garde and the Middle ages”.

Gadalzen- Chromatophonies (2001)

Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet (2008)

The Sparrow Quartet features the borderless sounds of two banjos, fiddle and cello, fronted by Abigail Washburn who has been hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “a daring, definite talent, whose feel for the folk idiom results in moving material. Soulful is the word.” The LA Times described her music saying, “Abigail Washburn stomped and skipped through fiery Appalachian takes on the local songs of Sichuan… She nails the dips and peaks of pitch while leading her band in scorching variations on simple, repetitive traditional melodies.”

Santiago Vazquez- Mbira y Pampa (2005)

After a 4-year hiatus from the studio, this highly-anticipated album came out of extensive rehearsal and recording on location in the beautiful Cooley mountains in the northeast of Ireland.  This environment, rich in the history and culture of ancient Ireland, inspired much of the creativity and new writing on the recording.

Flook-Flook! Live! (1996)

Flook has always been celebrated for their organic, fluid and brilliantly innovative all-acoustic fusion of Irish folklore with modern and trans-national rhythms. What really makes them extraordinary, however, is the way their sound emerges from a sixth sense, allowing band members to communicate on a subliminal level. There is an uncanny interplay between the players; each seems to respond not only to what is presently being heard but also to as-yet-unvoiced impulses. Even when performing sets they have interpreted many times before, inspiration leaps between them like multi-hued tongues of flame and long-familiar tunes become utterly transformed, fresh and new.
